Porches is a village and parish in the municipality of Lagoa, in the district of Faro (Algarve).
The village is situated on EN 125 between Alcantarilha and Lagoa. The surrounding area is known for its winemaking and numerous potteries, where locally sourced clay is used to produce artistic ceramics and hand-painted tiles. Pottery is one of the village’s hallmarks.
In the center, the oldest houses cluster around the tall church, built in 1882 on the foundations of an older one that was destroyed during the 1755 earthquake.
The village was only settled in the 16th century; the oldest colony, now called Old Porches, was located closer to the coast. The first evidence of human occupation in this area dates back to prehistoric times: a menhir from the Neolithic period (5000-4000 B.C.) found nearby is now on display in the front garden of the Convent of São José in Lagoa.
The coastline between Armação de Pêra and Carvoeiro is composed of incredible rock formations with hidden caves and grottoes, broken up by sandy bays and sheltered beaches that dominate the landscape. A site of particular interest is the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Rocha, situated on a narrow cliff.
The village is also close to several renowned golf courses, most of which are located in unspoiled areas with stunning views, making the Algarve a paradise for golfers from all over the world.
